Marchesi Di Barolo | Sarmassa (DOCG)

Produced by:
Marchesi di Barolo is a historic estate in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy. Established in the 19th century, it is celebrated for its deep connection to the Barolo appellation and for producing wines that combine tradition with elegance and balance.

Country/Region:
Piedmont, Italy - Barolo DOCG. The Sarmassa vineyard is located on the southeastern slope above the village of Barolo, with soils of Sant’Agata marl mixed with clay, silt, and abundant stones, providing excellent drainage.

Grape/Blend: 100% Nebbiolo

ABV: Approx. 14%

Tasting Notes:

  • Appearance: Bright garnet-red color.
  • Aroma: Complex and refined, with notes of rose, licorice, vanilla, and subtle hints of tobacco and pine resin.
  • Palate: Full-bodied, elegant, and structured, with firm yet polished tannins. The finish is long, harmonious, and spiced, showing excellent balance and depth.

Terroir:

The Sarmassa vineyard’s Sant’Agata marl soils, rich in clay, silt, and stones, provide excellent drainage. This unique terroir imparts both concentration and finesse to the Nebbiolo grapes.

Viticulture:

  • Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure selection of the best Nebbiolo clusters.
  • Traditional vineyard practices emphasize balance and respect for the terroir.

Vinification:

  • Fermentation on skins to extract aromas, tannins, and color.
  • Extended aging in oak casks to refine structure and enhance complexity.
  • Further bottle aging before release to ensure elegance and balance.

Food pairing:

  • Truffle-based dishes, such as tajarin pasta with white truffle.
  • Roast game and braised beef.
  • Mature cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano.
  • Mushroom risotto or earthy vegetable dishes.

The Sarmassa vineyard is historically prized for producing wines with both power and elegance, making it one of the most respected crus in Barolo.
